IBM Announces New Grid Computing Initiative
On August 2, 2001, IBM announced a new corporate initiative to support and exploit distributed computing based on Globus Grid Technology. This effort, described as similar to its Linux initiative, has already won IBM two major support contracts in the U.K. and Holland.
While dollar amounts for the initiative were not announced, the Associated Press also reported that IBM was investing $4 billion into building 50 computer server farms around the world, and The New York Times and CNET reported that IBM would be lending support to the Global Grid Forum and the Globus Project.
